War Between Archaic and Modern
By Dante Maffia,Rome

It is as if an Argentine Siddharta wanted to revive the pre-Columbian rites and customs, not only to make an archaeological re-discovery but also to take a measure of everything in a civilization that has not been lost. Not simply a recognition of an offering but also a challenge. The figures, totems and signs are made of parts that are inaccessible, in distance and in proximity, and have a mysterious rhythm that violently offers its totality and then immediately denies it.

Nevertheless, Graciela Cassel doesn’t seek to reiterate the history of a civilization, the ruins of a consumed tragedy that is lyrically remembered; she wants to suggest that no human influence, cultural or social stylistics, are lost forever or remain inert. It is clear that the painter not only counts on formal and technical values, but also on the qualitative importance that her images will take in the panorama of Argentine painting.
