“Intrinsic Waves” is an 8 feet x 8 feet x 8 feet installation built with steel, wood, and LED lights. In a small setting depicted by this piece, the ocean, sky, stars, and rocks connect in the vibrance of the night.

“Yes, I am a traveler, a dream traveler, during the night I adventure into mysterious places.”

IThe iconic dream traveler who inspires me is Odysseus. Homer’s epic poems also depict the seas as he tells us of Odysseus’s journey, returning home after ten years of battles in Troy. Yet, the journey is cursed because he is punished by the sea God Poseidon for blinding his son. Odysseus’ intensity, sense of honor, and courage are all clear as he crosses water. This journey sorts all obstacles so he can return to his beloved Penelope.

Rivers and seas are always present in mythology. Abtu and Anet, in Egyptian mythology, are two sacred fish that travel through rivers by the side of the boat carrying the God Ra. These supernatural fish protect Ra from dangers. During the night, they travel through the sky and during the day, below the earth. They work their protective charm even though destiny is powerful:  not all futures, including danger,  may be changed. In Greet mythology, fate also controls destiny: Acheron, a river that flows from Hades, houses an oracle on its banks, who lays stories of fate out to enter into the wider world.

But here, in “Intrinsic Waves,” I am forgetting fate; instead, I am watching the tidal pull of the moon towards the ocean, and the waves bulging up into the moon’s pattern. High tides, invisible forces making the waves pulling in and later receding, opening the horizon.  The beach in between, dividing the world between water and sky. Oceans, rivers, lakes test our strengths because of the danger they present. In this piece, a number of experiences are possible: the middle of the night includes stars in the sky; below, the waves sway and burst, catching the light of the stars; the rising moon travels to unexplored places.  All viewers can see in this deep sky, flares of light. These flares burst in contact with each other:  red, yellow, floating inside the blue dark sky. In this captured moment, a long beach swallows all the oxygen and the wave makes another jump into the ocean.
