“Luminiscent Waters” is an installation that measures 10 x 10 x 8 feet, created within an organic circle shape. On three of its sides, the creation relies on wooden structures with island shapes. There are two large island-form wooden structures accompanied by seven small wood structures arranged within, again, a grouping of island pattern. These structures “hang” around an organic circle-like component covered with sand within the size of 10 x 10 feet. Neon lights are also placed on the sand, continuing the flow of light presented on the large structures above. The circular-shaped sand surface has a small pond inside with water flowing inside the basin, adding sound to this installation. Seven boulders are placed around the sand and serve as a place where viewers can sit and experience the landscape of “Luminiscent Waters.” The two hanging pieces, with the shape of islands, feature neon lights clipped onto them. Their surface has been painted with soft turquoise and blue color pigments.
Luminescent Waters is an abstract installation inspired by the phenomenon of bioluminescent waters found in places like Mosquito Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico, and the coast of California, where nature combines basic elements—water, light, and sand—to create stunning, glowing displays. In the natural world, microscopic organisms such as plankton emit light through a chemical reaction involving luciferase enzymes and oxygen, causing the water to glow vividly when set in motion and transforming ordinary beaches into almost otherworldly scenes. Drawing from this remarkable event, this installation uses neon light, a fountain, sand, a glass sculpture inside the fountain, and two large wood structures resembling islands, with a video of the ocean embedded at its center. Through these materials and components, Luminescent Waters evokes the complexity and unpredictability of nature’s ingenuity, offering viewers a layered and immersive experience that reflects on the surprising beauty created when elemental forces interact in unique ways.
